The new master bedroom closet doesn’t have as much space as our old one, so I’m planning to buy a dresser. At the top end of the price range, I like this one from Wayfair, mostly because it’s very, very big (58 x 20 x 66 –> 76600 in^3).
However, it’s also $2400, which seems like a completely insane amount of money to spend on a dresser.
This one, from Ashley furniture, looks similar but is $1200 and 49,000 in^3, probably plenty big. However, I just don’t like the look of it as much. It looks much more rustic. Perhaps switching out the door handles would help?
I also like this dresser, also from Wayfair:
It’s much smaller: 40 x 61 x 16 –> 40,000 in^3. That’s only slightly bigger than half the other one. However, at $680, it’s much more affordable. We could try it and see if we had enough space and buy a second if need be.
I have had mixed luck with Ikea. I absolutely love some of their bookcases, the narrow one especially, but some of their stuff just looks cheap and shoddy. It’s hard to know what you’ll get. I guess I’d have to trek down there to pick it up anyway.
I like the idea of wall papering the front of the drawers like this.
I wouldn’t paint it white, but maybe with wall paper like this? Or maybe something subtle in beige. My experience as a knitter, quilter and sewer has been that it never, ever makes sense to craft something in order to save money – only for the fun of it. And while this seems like a fun project, I am up to my eyeballs right now with house stuff and not really in the mood. I haven’t been exercising or crafting or really doing anything other than facilitating our move and house upgrades lately, so the last thing I need is a “fun” project.
Thoughts? I think maybe I need to let the desire for lots of volume go and just get rid of more stuff. How many clothes do we really need?
I have the IKEA dresser pictured. It’s very functional with nice deep drawers. I love the wallpaper idea and now I’m shopping wall paper for just that purpose.

Becca – I think the wall paper is very effective because she chose a large piece and pattern-matched across the three drawers.
I have the dark gray. Byron got it without consulting me. We had an Airbnb which had a bright turquoise (which they don’t make anymore), and he just went out and impulse bought it. But a bright color would have been my choice. All our bedroom furniture is natural wood + white trim, so the dark gray kind of doesn’t go that well
I don’t have that Ikea dresser but have looked at it — I think it’s one that actually is real wood, right? In that case, it’s probably pretty decent quality. My only comment is that Ikea wood is usually a softer wood so it does get dings.
Also FWIW I don’t think $2400 is completely crazy for a dresser that is 1) huge 2) you really like and 3) you are likely to keep for a long time. Especially if it’s good wood and well constructed. Hard to tell on that last one from a Wayfair listing though.
Yeah, I don’t think it’s crazy to spend $2400 really on anything you value. We’re spent more than that on painting and lighting and will spend more than that on A/C, and given our furnace just failed, a new furnace. I know all of those things are worth more than $2400 to me, and that’s also what they cost. I was thinking maybe a very large dresser might be worth $2400, but I think we’re going to end up having more room in our closet and won’t need that much space. Either way I’m going to hold off until we can put in the shelves and see where we are.
