the nanny search

When B was a manager and was hiring, he’d review resumes for a position.  The resumes would already have been roughly pre-screened by the HR person.  B would review on the order of 100 resumes for a position.  Of these, he’d phone screen 20 to 25, and 5 to 10 would come in for interviews.  Finally, of course, one person would get hired.    I’d like to interview 5 to 10 candidates for the nanny position, so I plan to take an approach similar to the one B took at work – 50 emails, 25 phone screens, 5 interviews, one nanny.  I think one of the things that made B a great manager was his exhaustive approach to hiring.  Hiring is so critical when you’re a manager, and I think many people don’t realize the incredible amount of work that’s involved.

I’ve signed up on care.com, and am wading into that work.  At this point, I don’t know whether it’s going to be easy to find someone great or incredibly difficult.  The very process makes me really sad.  I really, really don’t want to leave I four days a week, but on the flip side, I’m not ready to kiss my career goodbye.  I’m determined to give working mom a try.
